A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

What's Your Faction?

No, I'm not talking about Daily Kos factions-- haven't we had enough of that lately? This question is purely for fun and is based on the young adult novel (and movie) Divergent.

The story is set in post-apocalyptic Chicago. Sixteen year-olds face Choosing Day, where after a computer-simulation aptitude test they are allowed to choose one of five factions they'll live with for the rest of their lives...if they can get past the initiation. If not, they become factionless people, essentially living on the streets in poverty, doing the work no one else wants to do.

The one thing more dangerous than being factionless, however, is being divergent-- that is, testing strongly in more than one faction. I won't spoil the story by telling you exactly why it's so dangerous to be divergent; I'll just say there's a bunch of you out there. But, for the sake of this game, I'll ask you to imagine you're sixteen years old again and highly motivated to fit in to one of the five factions, or risk never fitting in anywhere at all.

The five faction, based on human virtues, were created as a response to what people think went wrong and on how to prevent such devastating wars from ever happening again.

Which faction would 16 year old you choose?

If you most value Intelligence you'll join Erudite, the faction that believes that stupidity, ignorance, and out of control aggression and passions led mankind to the brink. They believe that knowledge is the only logical solution to the problem of conflict.

If you most value Selflessness you'll choose Abnegation, the faction that values sacrifice for the good of mankind and is devoted to community service. Abnegation faction is given the task of running the government since they can be counted on to put others' needs before their own.

If you value Peacefulness you'll join Amity, which acts on the values of trust, self-sufficiency, forgiveness, kindness and involvement. They are the gardeners, the healers, the caretakers and the artists who believe the goal of life is happiness.

If you value Bravery you'll join the Dauntless, who believe in courage and standing up for others. They're fearless to the point of recklessness, and are the physical daredevils who guard the fences around the city.

If you most value Honesty you'll join Candor who value impartiality and believe that only those willing to be transparent and dedicated to telling the truth can be really strong. Not even little white lies are allowed!

Online quiz: Which Faction Are You?

In the early stages of reading the book I was sure I'd want to join Amity, since it most closely mirrors my work choices in life. To my surprise, despite fooling around with various tests, I kept testing lowest in that category. When limited to the five categories I kept testing the highest in Erudite; when Divergent was a choice that came up first every time. (I knew it! One a'them weirdos who doesn't fit in anywhere!)

Anyway, have some fun, and if none of these factions fits feel free to create your own. I started a few dystopian Right-wing faction ideas in the Tip jar.
