A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

What Personal Recipe or Food Fixin's Can You Share With Us Today?

People sometimes say they miss the recipes in troll diaries, so here's your chance. It doesn't have to be elaborate, or food pr0n, or even particularly good for you. You may just have your own method for scrambling eggs, or cooking bacon. (Can you tell I have breakfast on the brain?) Tell us what you like fixin' to eat these days.

We just spent a day at an interesting continuing education seminar, run by a psychiatrist on the subject of nutritional interventions for chronic inflammation, which is implicated in many seemingly unrelated, age-related diseases, including depression. Listening to an M.D. talk about food as medicine for six hours is unusual enough, but this guy even had some good recipes I'll pass on to you.

Smart Coffee Recipe

1 cup of caffeinated black coffee
1/2 tsp coconut oil
1/2 teaspoon of dark, unsweetened cocoa (Hershey's works) or cinnamon
Optional: stevia for sweetener

Benefits of Coffee: Enhances cognitive function, reduces formation of beta-amyloid, found in Alzheimer's. Drinking 3 cups of coffee a day were associated with a 4-fold slower rate of cognitive decline in a study of elderly men over a 10-year period.

The question arises: Wouldn't coconut oil raise your cholesterol or blood lipids? Coconut oil is a medium-chain trigyceride (MCT), which is used by the brain as an alternative energy source to glucose, and studies have shown no permanent elevation of cholesterol or triglycerides with regular use.

What's so good about cocoa?
It improves cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure, inhibiting platelet aggregation, and reducing insulin resistance.
Optimal dose: 10 grams a day

And one more:

Anti-Inflammatory Protein Shake:

20 grams of chocolate whey protein powder
1 tsp dark unsweetened cocoa
1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1 tblsp fish oil

I know what you're thinking-- fish oil? But this psychiatrist swears you won't taste it and even sneaks it into his daughter's "chocolate shake" without her noticing.
So-- What's cookin' at your place?
